Working with bats has been the highlight of my career and I am extremely eager to continue to work with bats in any capacity.
My name is Angela McTammany, and during the last year I worked three field seasons with the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife. I have a Bachelor's of Science in Environmental Studies from the University of Central Florida, and an extensive background in fieldwork both professionally and as a volunteer in Florida, Colorado, Hawaii, and Oregon since graduating in 2020. This month I relocated to Sunnyvale, California (for my spouse's work) and I am searching for opportunities in which I can continue contributing to bat conservation and research.
From May through the end of September 2024 I worked on a project for the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife Health and Population Laboratory as the lab's Biological Science Assistant for White Nose-Syndrome. I spent several months traveling throughout Oregon identifying bridge roosts to passively sample for Pd. I am extremely passionate about bats, and I worked on this project independently - researching and designing a survey - and ultimately visited over 150 bridges across remote Eastern Oregon to quantify signs of bat use. I set out acoustic monitors (Song Meter SM4BAT-FS), collected guano, took environmental swabs, and photographed bats.
That position left me with an intense fascination for bat behavior, which I observed throughout my work, and a strong desire to contribute to the conservation of this magnificent mammal. Any opportunities, advise, or connections anyone might have for continuing to work with bats in California would be extremely helpful and greatly appreciated.
Sincerely,
Angela McTammany
